Christmas in Japan
A Commercial Celebration
In Japan, Christmas is not a religious holiday in the same way it is in Western countries, as the majority of the population practices Shinto or Buddhism, with only a small percentage being Christian. Instead, Christmas is largely seen as a commercial and cultural event, with an emphasis on fun, romance, and the joy of giving. It’s more akin to a celebration of winter and festivity rather than a religious observance of the birth of Jesus Christ.
Christmas decorations begin appearing in stores and public spaces in late November, and major shopping districts like Tokyo’s Shibuya and Ginza become beautifully adorned with Christmas lights, elaborate window displays, and Christmas trees. The season is marked by special sales, promotions, and the introduction of Christmas-themed products in shops.
